Sargassum and Our Shores
A NATURAL PART OF LIFE IN THE TROPICS
Guests visiting Ambergris Caye between March and October may notice patches of seaweed along the shoreline — this is a naturally occurring algae called Sargassum. While it plays an important role in the marine ecosystem by providing habitat for sea turtles, fish, and other sea life, seasonal blooms have become more frequent in recent years due to changing ocean conditions.
Sargassum is completely harmless, but when it arrives in large volumes, it can affect the beach environment. At Margaritaville Beach Resort, Ambergris Caye, our dedicated team works daily to maintain the beauty and comfort of our beachfront, clearing the shoreline as conditions allow. Though this natural phenomenon is beyond our control, we are committed to making your stay as enjoyable as possible.
We appreciate your understanding and invite you to enjoy everything our unique island destination has to offer — from vibrant marine life to unforgettable adventures beyond just the beach.
